My parents have a Volvo 240 wagon that has been sitting for the past 7 years at our house in Alabama. They have told me I could have it, and I could possibly be bringing it down this or next weekend on a trailer. I know it needs brakes, tires, alternator, battery, some gaskets, and new fluids and filters, but what else would I need to get it running and driving as a semi reliable daily driver? The reason it was parked was because oil kept leaking on the alternator from the valve cover, other than that it ran fine. Here is a 122 wagon for your time.

Old Volvos don't really need anything if they're maintained well, those bastards will keep going going going and going, I swear they're somewhat automotive cockroaches. The big question is what engine/gearbox it's got. B19 = not good, B18 = OK but lazy, B20/B23 = very good, automatic = fuck no..

Literally hasn't been started in 7 years? Check the fuel tank for rust. Also new spark plugs (and possibly wires/distributor cap). Throw in a new ignition coil for fun (it should be pretty cheap). Doesn't hurt to replace all the fuel hoses.

That's in the list.

Clean out the fuelt tank and all the lines and replace the fuel filter. Flush the radiator and all the hoses.

1990 B23, and sadly auto, but it was rebuilt at some point. It will be used as a daily driver, so I can convert my 4Runner to manual and give it a V8 transplant. Then the Volvo will become a project.

All right, I already planned on replacing all the filters, and luckily I drifted around a field until it was almost empty of gas. Then I parked it and it was never driven again.

Yep, I drifted it a few times in a field when I was 13, then I parked it and it was never started again. Rust shouldn't be a problem due to the lack of salt, but yeah I'll check that.

It's been in the southeast all it's life, so rust shouldn't be a problem.

sounds like a fun project. It might be useful to get some oil on top of the pistons in case they are seized or the walls and rings are dry. I am sure a google search will reveal tons of ideas for reviving a car thats been sitting.

if the auto was rebuilt I'd say it's OK (I'm guessing it's a AW70/71, and they weren't that bad), but I'd change the fluids on it, and I'd check the floor for rust.

Honestly, if I can get it to last me a year, I'll be okay with it. That's how long I'm projecting my 4Runner swap. If this happens, I'll try to post a video, because apparently some people are fascinated with first start videos.

I figured I'd rather give you this link rather than listing the few problems I know of, it's a pretty good list.

Congrats as a Volvo owner, have fun :)

The floors might be rusty, but it's just ventilation, right! But I had already planned on changing all the fluids out.

Thanks, and if this happens, I'll try my best to have fun. Even without a/c.

I'd say you're good to go then. I'm by no means an expert on Volvos, but since I am a Scandinavian I've owned a few.

Definitely check it - the tank can rust from the inside out. Mine did, but it's much older.
